Sail Rock, The Best Dive Site in the Gulf of Thailand | The Divers Boat

There are dive sites. And there is diving at Sail Rock, Koh Tao. Located between Koh Tao and Koh Phangan, in the middle of the Gulf of Thailand, it isn’t just another pinnacle on a map. It’s the site experienced divers travel thousands of kilometres to reach. The site where, on a single dive, two whale sharks circled our group for several minutes. We didn’t move. We didn’t need to. They came to us. That’s Sail Rock.

Diving Sail Rock, Koh Tao: why it’s the best site in the Gulf

The answer comes down to one word: isolation. Sail Rock is a granite pinnacle rising from 40 metres to just a few metres below the surface, in open water. This unique setting makes industrial fishing impossible here. As a result, marine life has developed undisturbed for decades.

That’s exactly why diving at Sail Rock concentrates an exceptional density of fish — huge schools of chevron barracuda, giant trevally, groupers and stingrays. On top of that, during the right season, whale sharks make regular appearances. Our team had the extraordinary luck of spotting two at once on the same dive. An experience that perfectly illustrates why Sail Rock is in a category of its own in the Gulf of Thailand.

The Sail Rock chimney — a dive like no other in the Gulf of Thailand

Beyond its exceptional marine life, diving at Sail Rock offers something completely unique in the Gulf of Thailand: a natural vertical chimney running straight through the pinnacle. You enter at 18 metres and gradually ascend to 5 metres, surrounded by batfish and glassfish, bathed in light filtering down from the surface. Bring a torch — the glassfish inside are spectacular when lit up.

Swimming through this passage is, without question, one of the most extraordinary underwater experiences in Southeast Asia. What’s more, for divers who want to go further, Sail Rock’s maximum depth of 40 metres also makes it an excellent site for Advanced Open Water certifications and the Deep Diver specialty.

Marine life at Sail Rock, Koh Tao: what you’ll encounter

Diving Sail Rock rewards patient divers. Stay still, breathe slowly, and the ocean comes to you. Unlike many sites, encounters here are frequent and often spectacular at every depth.

  • 🦈 Whale sharks (year-round)
  • 🐟 Chevron barracuda schools
  • 🐟 Giant trevally and mackerel
  • 🐟 Malabar and marbled grouper
  • 🐟 Batfish and glassfish (chimney)
  • 🐟 Eagle rays and sailfish in open water
  • 🐟 Nudibranchs and flatworms (macro)
  • 🐟 Fusiliers and snappers

🦈 Whale sharks at Sail Rock — no season, just the luck of being there
Unlike many sites around the world, whale sharks have been spotted at Sail Rock every month of the year. The golden rule: stay still, let them come to you. The encounter will last much longer.

Our Sail Rock trips — daily departures from two islands

Tips for your Sail Rock dive

✅
The current can be strong — this is an advanced site. Make sure your buoyancy is solid before descending.
✅
Don’t chase whale sharks — stay still, let them come to you. The encounter will last much longer.
✅
Bring a torch for the chimney — the glassfish inside are spectacular when lit up.
✅
Nitrox is available — ask about our Nitrox specialty combined with your 3S trip to maximise bottom time.
✅
No season for whale sharks — they show up year-round. The key is simply being there.
