There are dive sites. And then there is Sail Rock dive site, Koh Tao. Located between Koh Tao and Koh Phangan in the middle of the Gulf of Thailand, Sail Rock is not just another pinnacle on a dive map. It is the site experienced divers travel thousands of kilometres to reach. The site where the ocean truly shows off. The site where, on one single dive, two whale sharks circled our group for several minutes, close enough to feel the power of their movement, far enough to remind us we were guests in their world. We didn’t move. We didn’t need to. They came to us. That’s Sail Rock.

Sail Rock dive site Koh Tao: why is it the best in the Gulf?
The answer is simple: isolation. Sail Rock is a granite pinnacle rising from 42 metres all the way to just below the surface, sitting in open sea with no coastline nearby. Because of this unique configuration, large-scale industrial fishing is impossible. As a result, marine life here has developed freely for decades, almost entirely undisturbed by human activity.
It is precisely this that explains the extraordinary density of fish life at Sail Rock, massive chevron barracuda schools, giant trevally, Malabar groupers and rays. Furthermore, during favourable periods, the whale shark ( the world’s largest fish) makes regular appearances here. Our team once encountered two whale sharks simultaneously on a single dive. An experience that perfectly illustrates why Sail Rock is in a league of its own in the Gulf of Thailand.
The chimney of Sail Rock : a unique experience in the Gulf of Thailand
Beyond its exceptional marine life, Sail Rock offers something found nowhere else in the Gulf of Thailand: a natural vertical chimney that cuts straight through the pinnacle. You enter at 18 metres and ascend progressively to 5 metres, surrounded by glassfish and batfish, with rays of light filtering down from the surface above. Bring a torch — the glassfish inside are spectacular with light.
Swimming through this passage is, without question, one of the most extraordinary underwater experiences in all of Southeast Asia and one of the most photographed spots in Thai underwater photography. For divers looking to go deeper, the maximum depth of 42 metres also makes Sail Rock an excellent site for Advanced Open Water certification and Deep Diver specialty dives.
Marine life at Sail Rock Koh Tao: what you’ll encounter
Sail Rock rewards patient divers. Stay still, breathe slowly, and the ocean comes to you. Unlike many sites where encounters are brief and unpredictable, Sail Rock offers consistently spectacular marine life at every depth.
- 🦈 Whale sharks (year-round)
- 🐟 Chevron barracuda schools
- 🐟 Giant trevally & kingfish
- 🐟 Malabar & marbled groupers
- 🐟 Batfish & glassfish (chimney)
- 🐟 Eagle rays & sailfish
- 🐟 Nudibranchs & flatworms
- 🐟 Fusiliers & snappers
Unlike many sites worldwide, whale sharks at Sail Rock have been spotted in every single month of the year. There is no specific season — the key is simply to be there. On one of our most memorable dives, two whale sharks appeared simultaneously and circled our group for the entire duration of the dive. The golden rule: stay still, let them come to you. The encounter will last far longer.
