After years of sailing the waters of the Gulf of Thailand aboard our two boats, our team knows the best dive sites of Koh Tao inside and out. Whether you are a beginner fresh from your first try dive or an experienced diver in search of thrills. Thailand’s diving island has something extraordinary to offer. Here is our selection of the 7 best dive sites around Koh Tao, the ones we bring our divers to with pride every week.
Dive sites
Military wrecks
Sail Rock every day
Year-round water temp
🥇 #1 — Sail Rock (Hin Bai), The best dive site in the Gulf of Thailand 🔗
0–40 m
~2h from Koh Tao
~1h15 from Koh Phangan
Sail Rock is a legend. This granite pinnacle rises above the surface like an iceberg, visible from afar. Underwater, it is another world: the famous vertical chimney a natural tunnel through the rock, entered at 18 metres and exiting at 5 metres, is a one-of-a-kind experience that divers never forget. Barracuda schools, giant trevally, groupers, stingrays and if you are lucky a whale shark. Whale shark sightings are possible year-round, with peaks between March and May and again from October to December.
We are the only dive centre in Koh Tao to offer Sail Rock every day of the week. On Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays, Sail Rock is the final site of our exclusive 3S Trip (Southwest Pinnacle → Samran Pinnacle → Sail Rock, 9am to 6pm). On all other days, we offer a double Sail Rock afternoon (11am to 6pm) — 2 full dives at the best site in the Gulf. From Koh Phangan, we depart daily at 10am for a double Sail Rock, returning at 4pm.
🥈 #2 — Samran Pinnacle, Our best-kept secret 🔗
14–40 m
~1h30 from Koh Tao
Exclusive — GPS only
Located in the open Gulf of Thailand, Samran Pinnacle is one of the least visited sites in the region and that is precisely what makes it so special. This submerged pinnacle is a local Thai fishing spot, unmarked and inaccessible without precise GPS coordinates and a sonar. We are virtually the only centre in Koh Tao to visit it regularly. In fact, Samran is the centrepiece of our exclusive 3S Trip.
A wild, intimate dive far from any crowd: massive barracuda schools, giant trevally, trevallies hunting in formation and cobia one of the Gulf’s most impressive and least-known apex predators. A wilder, more intimate experience unlike anything else around Koh Tao.
🥉 #3 — Chumphon Pinnacle, The best dive site of Koh Tao 🔗
14–35 m
~45 min from Koh Tao
If you can only do one dive in Koh Tao, do it here. Chumphon Pinnacle is, by most accounts, the best site on the island itself. A massive granite pinnacle whose summits are entirely covered in colourful anemones, alive with pink anemonefish. As you descend, swirling schools of barracuda, trevally and fusiliers surround you from every direction.
This is also one of the top sites for whale shark🔗sightings, our personal record here is two whale sharks on the same dive. Visibility can exceed 20 metres on a good day, and the Nitrox option is particularly well suited to exploring the deeper sections.
We schedule Chumphon Pinnacle on our morning sessions (6:30am to 11am) on all non-3S days, combined with a local site or wreck. A morning at Chumphon followed by a double Sail Rock in the afternoon makes for one of the best full dive days available in Koh Tao.
#4 — Southwest Pinnacle, Diversity in its purest form 🔗
7–30 m
~45 min from Koh Tao
Southwest Pinnacle is a series of rocky peaks rising from the sand, covered in sea fans, gorgonians and magnificent anemone gardens in the shallower sections. Further down, barrel sponges and a rich variety of corals dominate the scenery. This is one of our favourite sites for spotting giant groupers and barracuda. Southwest Pinnacle is the opening dive of our exclusive 3S Trip setting the tone perfectly for what follows at Samran and Sail Rock.
#5 — White Rock, The all-occasions dive site
5–20 m
~20 min from Koh Tao
White Rock is one of the most versatile sites around Koh Tao. By day, you encounter blue-spotted rays, moray eels, clownfish and an incredible variety of macro life. However, it is at night that White Rock truly reveals its character: bioluminescent squid, hunting octopuses, red-eyed shrimp, a spectacle we love sharing on our night dives. A site that consistently surprises, whatever time of day you dive it.
#6 — HTMS Sattakut & the military wrecks, Diving through history
18–30 m
~20 min from Koh Tao
3 wrecks available
Koh Tao is one of the rare destinations in Southeast Asia offering three military wrecks within easy reach. The HTMS Sattakut is the flagship: a 48-metre American landing craft from World War II, deliberately sunk in 2011 to create an artificial reef. Today it is covered in corals and inhabited by lionfish, moray eels, groupers and dense fusilier schools. Its two historical cannons are a highlight that no history-conscious diver should miss.
The HTMS Suphairin and HTMS Hanhak Sattru, two Thai military vessels sunk in 2023, are now fully accessible and offer fascinating complementary dives for wreck enthusiasts. Three wrecks, three different stories, all within 20 minutes of Mae Haad pier.
#7 — Japanese Garden, the best dive site for beginners
0–18 m
~25 min from Koh Tao
Japanese Garden is the ideal site for first dives and Try Scuba experiences. The water is calm and shallow, yet marine life is surprisingly rich: sea turtles, banded sea kraits, parrotfish, butterflyfish and an abundance of coral make every first dive genuinely memorable. The Red Rock coastline dive following the rocky shore to Japanese Garden and passing through a natural swim-through is also accessible to all Open Water certified divers.
This is where most of our Open Water students complete their confined water session and first open water dives. A gentle, welcoming place to fall in love with diving — and the starting point of many great underwater stories.
