The Twins dive site, Koh Tao, is one of those rare sites that genuinely works for every level of diver. Made up of two symmetrical granite formations separated by an immaculate sandy channel, the Twins dive site is as welcoming for first-time divers on a Try Scuba experience as it is rewarding for Advanced Open Water divers with a keen eye for detail. Moreover, moray eels, blue-spotted rays, multiple nudibranch species, emperor fish and butterflyfish make this a site that never runs out of things to discover.

Twins dive site Koh Tao: what makes it special?

The Twins dive site gets its name from its distinctive layout: two almost identical submerged granite formations sitting side by side on the north-west coast of Koh Tao, just 25 minutes by boat from Mae Haad pier. Between the two rocks, an immaculate sandy channel extends down to 16 metres, forming a natural light-filled corridor where marine life loves to gather. The tops of the rocks, meanwhile, rise to just 5 metres below the surface. According to Wikipedia, Koh Tao is home to over 27 dive sites — and this one stands out for its exceptional versatility.

What makes the Twins dive site particularly special is its dual personality. On one hand, its shallow depth, gentle current and sheltered configuration make it one of The Divers Boat’s preferred sites for Try Scuba experiences and Open Water training dives. On the other, the density and diversity of its small marine life — nudibranchs, moray eels, rays, emperor fish — make it a genuinely rewarding site for Advanced Open Water divers who take time to look closely.

The sandy channel — the signature of the Twins dive site

Between the two rock formations at the Twins dive site, the central sandy channel is far more than a simple transition zone. It is precisely here that blue-spotted rays like to settle, half-buried in the sand, waiting patiently for divers to spot them. Sergeant major fish also form their dense, colourful schools here — easily observable even for complete beginners on their first dive.

Furthermore, the visual contrast between the white sand and the blue water creates a particularly photogenic environment. As a result, this is one of the most appreciated sites on Koh Tao among underwater photographers — whether the subject is a tiny nudibranch hidden in the rocks or a blue-spotted ray gliding across the sandy bottom.

Marine life you’ll encounter at the Twins dive site

The Twins dive site is a macro and observation site par excellence. Far from the open-water world of the big pelagic sites, it rewards patient, curious divers who slow down and look. Our multilingual dive guides love bringing students here for exactly that reason: the richness of the site turns every training dive into a genuine marine biology lesson. In addition, the variety of species here means no two dives are ever the same.

  • Moray eels in the crevices
  • Sergeant major fish in schools
  • Blue-spotted rays on the sand
  • Nudibranchs (multiple species)
  • Emperor fish
  • Butterflyfish

Twins dive site: a nudibranch paradise on Koh Tao
The rocky walls of the Twins dive site shelter several species of nudibranchs — those shell-less molluscs with extraordinary colours that macro photographers love. Often tiny and perfectly camouflaged, they require a trained eye and a patient approach to spot. Our dive guides know their favourite hiding spots and are always happy to point them out.

Perfect for Try Scuba & Open Water training

Thanks to its maximum depth of 19 metres, gentle current and sheltered configuration, the Twins dive site is one of The Divers Boat’s go-to sites for Try Scuba experiences and SSI Open Water training dives. Beginners can get comfortable underwater in a reassuring environment, with enough varied marine life to make every dive memorable right from the very first time.

However, do not be fooled — this is far from being a beginners-only site. Certified Advanced Open Water divers find plenty to marvel at on every visit, particularly through the diversity of nudibranchs and the regular presence of blue-spotted rays across the sandy channel. Furthermore, it is an ideal setting for an Underwater Photography SSI specialty course. Check our fun dive prices for all available options.
