Chumphon Pinnacle dive site Koh Tao: what makes it special?

Chumphon Pinnacle is a fully submerged granite massif whose summit reaches up to 14 metres below the surface, while its base extends down to 35 metres. Situated approximately 12 kilometres north-west of Koh Tao, the site features one large north-south oriented main pinnacle flanked by several secondary ones. Among them, the famous Barracuda Rock to the south-west serves as a regular gathering point for dense schools of barracuda and grey reef sharks.

Unlike the coastal reefs closer to the island, Chumphon Pinnacle is a true blue water dive site. Thanks to its offshore position, visibility regularly reaches 20 to 30 metres — and sometimes even more during the right season. It is precisely this remote setting that draws so many large pelagic species and makes this spot a completely different diving experience from any other site around Koh Tao, Thailand’s diving island.

Marine life: what you’ll encounter diving Chumphon Pinnacle

In terms of marine biodiversity, Chumphon Pinnacle has no equal around Koh Tao. Right at the top of the pinnacle, a carpet of magnificent anemones welcomes divers, teeming with pink anemonefish. Then, as you descend deeper along the walls, the encounters become increasingly spectacular.

  • 🐟 Dense schools of barracuda
  • 🐟 Fusiliers in silver clouds
  • 🐟 Giant Malabar groupers
  • 🐟 Giant trevally in formation
  • 🐟 Moray eels in the crevices
  • 🐟 Stingrays on the sandy patches
  • 🐟 Batfish (curious & friendly)
  • 🦈 Whale shark (March – May)

🦈 Whale sharks at Chumphon Pinnacle
A few times a year — most often between March and May — a whale shark makes an appearance at Chumphon. Although these encounters are never guaranteed, this site is nevertheless one of the few places in the Gulf of Thailand where sightings are regularly reported. Should you cross paths with one during your dive, it will undoubtedly be a memory for life.

What to expect on a dive at Chumphon Pinnacle

After roughly 45 minutes of sailing from Mae Haad pier, the boat moors to the site’s buoy line. As soon as you enter the water, schools of barracuda and fusiliers greet you above the pinnacle top. At 14 metres, a stunning garden of anemones spreads across the summit as far as the eye can see.

Following the wall down, the crevices reveal perfectly camouflaged moray eels, shrimps and scorpionfish. Moreover, Barracuda Rock — accessible from the south when conditions allow — offers a dive within a dive: a satellite pinnacle at 20–30 metres where barracuda gather in breathtaking numbers. Finally, on the way back up the mooring line, curious batfish often escort divers all the way to the safety stop.

💨 Nitrox at Chumphon Pinnacle – our recommendation
For a deep dive like Chumphon, Enriched Air (Nitrox) is an excellent choice: it extends your bottom time and therefore lets you enjoy this exceptional site even longer. At The Divers Boat, Nitrox is available for all certified divers — simply book it in advance when you make your reservation.

What level do you need to dive Chumphon Pinnacle Koh Tao?

The minimum certification required is Open Water (OW): the top of the pinnacle at 14 metres suits newly certified divers perfectly, and the marine life there is already outstanding. However, to fully make the most of the site — reaching Barracuda Rock, handling variable currents and navigating open water without a visual reference — the Advanced Open Water (AOW) level is strongly recommended.

Furthermore, Chumphon Pinnacle is an ideal setting for specialty courses: Deep Diver, Enriched Air Nitrox or Underwater Photography. Feel free to speak with The Divers Boat team about combining a specialty course with a fun dive on this exceptional site.
