Diving Koh Samui day trip to Sail Rock: is it really possible?
Yes — and the key is a 10:00am departure from Koh Phangan. Most dive operators in the area depart at 8:00am. Consequently, guests from Koh Samui simply cannot make it in time: the first Lomprayah ferry arrives in Koh Phangan too late for an 8am boat. As a result, Koh Samui divers are effectively locked out.
At The Divers Boat, we made a deliberate choice. Our Koh Phangan boat departs at 10:00am and returns at 4:00pm. This schedule is designed precisely to allow guests from Koh Samui to take the first Lomprayah, join our boat in Koh Phangan, dive a full double Sail Rock, and catch the last Lomprayah back the same evening. No other dive operator in the Gulf of Thailand makes this diving Koh Samui day trip possible.

Why Sail Rock is worth the trip from Koh Samui
Sail Rock — known locally as Hin Bai — is widely regarded as the best dive site in the Gulf of Thailand. It is an isolated granite pinnacle rising from 42 metres to just below the surface, in open sea between Koh Phangan and Koh Tao. Its isolation means industrial fishing is impossible and, as a result, marine life here has developed freely for decades. According to Wikipedia, it is consistently ranked among the top dive sites in Southeast Asia.
- Whale sharks (year-round)
- Chevron barracuda schools
- Giant trevally and kingfish
- Malabar and marbled groupers
- Batfish and glassfish (chimney)
- Sailfish
Furthermore, the site features a unique natural chimney — a vertical swim-through entered at 18 metres and exiting at 5 metres, surrounded by glassfish and batfish. Our team has encountered two whale sharks simultaneously on a single dive here. You can read the full site description on our Sail Rock dive site page →
