Japanese Garden dive site, Koh Tao, is where most divers take their very first breath underwater on Thailand’s diving island. Nestled in a naturally sheltered bay on the north coast, this site is the home of Try Scuba experiences, confined water exercises and first Open Water training dives. Yet Japanese Garden is far more than a beginners’ site: its abundant corals, colourful reef fish, banded sea kraits and occasional eagle ray sightings keep it endlessly interesting. Moreover, its Red Rock coastline dive with a natural swim-through adds an adventurous dimension for all certified divers.

Japanese Garden dive site: where it all begins

Japanese Garden is tucked into a naturally sheltered bay on the north coast of Koh Tao, just 25 minutes by boat from Mae Haad pier. Its unique configuration — a calm, shallow bay running from the shoreline down to 18 metres — makes it the ideal site for confined water exercises and the first Try Scuba and Open Water training dives. It is here that the vast majority of our students take their first breath underwater, in complete safety and in a genuinely beautiful environment.

However, this site is far from being beginners-only. Its abundant corals and colourful marine life make it a genuinely enjoyable dive at any level. Furthermore, for certified divers looking to explore further, the Red Rock coastline dive — following the rocky shore all the way to the bay and passing through a natural swim-through — adds a memorable adventurous dimension, accessible to all Open Water certified divers.

The coral garden at Japanese Garden, Koh Tao

Japanese Garden takes its name from the density and beauty of its corals. According to Wikipedia, coral reefs support over 25% of all marine species despite covering less than 1% of the ocean floor — and this bay is a fine example of that biodiversity. Branching, massive and soft corals alternate across the sandy floor, creating a rich and colourful habitat for a wide variety of reef fish.

In addition, the clarity of the water in this sheltered bay ensures excellent visibility year-round, even on overcast days. As a result, it offers consistently stable and reassuring diving conditions — a quality that is particularly valuable for training dives and Try Scuba experiences where beginner comfort is the absolute priority.

Marine life you’ll encounter at Japanese Garden

Despite its shallow depth, Japanese Garden hosts a surprisingly varied marine life. Every dive at this site holds its share of beautiful encounters — and sometimes, the most unexpected ones. Indeed, the diversity here rivals many deeper sites on the island.

  • Sergeant major fish in schools
  • Butterflyfish
  • Parrotfish
  • Banded sea kraits
  • Branching & massive corals
  • Eagle ray (occasional)

Banded sea kraits at Japanese Garden
This site is one of the few spots on Koh Tao where banded sea kraits — black-and-white striped sea snakes — are regularly seen. Although venomous, these animals are naturally docile and show no interest in divers. An encounter with a sea krait is always a striking moment, and often the most memorable highlight of a first-time diver’s Try Scuba experience.

The Red Rock coastline dive with swim-through

For certified Open Water divers looking to explore further from Japanese Garden, the Red Rock coastline dive is a particularly rewarding option. This dive follows the rocky shoreline from Red Rock all the way to the bay, tracing the natural contours of the reef. Along the way, the route passes through a natural swim-through — an opening in the rock that is consistently one of the highlights of the dive.

Importantly, this coastline dive is accessible to all Open Water certified divers — no Advanced certification required. It is precisely that accessibility that makes it such a popular option for divers finishing their OW course or looking for a more adventurous experience in a still-safe environment. Our dive guides lead every group with care along this route. In contrast to many “adventure” sites on the island, this one remains manageable and genuinely fun.
