There is a place in the Gulf of Thailand that divers around the world put on their list before they even book their flights. A solitary rock rising from the deep, roughly halfway between Koh Tao and Koh Phangan. That rock is Sail Rock — and it fully deserves its reputation as the most iconic dive site in the Gulf of Thailand.
At The Divers Boat, we go there every day. Not because we have to. Because it’s that good.
Sail Rock: A Unique Dive Site in the Gulf of Thailand
Known locally as Hin Bai, Sail Rock is a rocky pinnacle that breaks the surface of the Gulf of Thailand roughly 15 kilometres north of Koh Tao. From the boat, it looks almost modest: a jagged spire of granite rising a few metres above the waterline. But drop below the surface, and a completely different world opens up.
The rock plunges to around 40 metres deep, draped in hard and soft corals, sponges and sea fans. A natural chimney cuts through the centre of the formation — a vertical tunnel you can swim up through while fish swirl above you and light filters down from the open ocean.
It is one of the most iconic experiences in Southeast Asian diving, full stop. And this dive site in the Gulf of Thailand is accessible to Open Water certified divers and above — no Advanced certification needed to experience it.
What Marine Life Will You See at Sail Rock?
Sail Rock concentrates marine life in a way that few sites anywhere in the world can match. The rocky structure acts as a cleaning station and feeding ground, drawing in pelagic species from the open ocean alongside the reef regulars.
On a dive at Sail Rock with The Divers Boat, expect to encounter:
- Whale sharks — the gentle giants of the ocean visit Sail Rock year-round, with peak sightings in March, April and October. An encounter here is not a rumour or a lucky accident — it happens regularly enough that our team knows their patterns.
- Barracuda schools — forming dense, swirling silver tornadoes around the upper sections of the pinnacle. Few sights in diving are as viscerally impressive.
- Giant groupers — territorial, unbothered by divers, and utterly magnificent. Some individuals have been here for years.
- Moray eels — tucked into every crevice, watching the world go by with their characteristic calm.
- Batfish — curious and almost comically flat, they hover near the cleaning stations and seem to enjoy human company.
- Queen fish and giant trevally — hunting in formation, moving fast, flashing silver in the blue water.
The chimney itself is a world apart: swim through slowly, look up, and you’ll see the silhouettes of fish against the light above you. It’s the kind of moment that makes divers come back to Koh Tao year after year.
The 3S Combo: Three Iconic Gulf of Thailand Dive Sites in One Day
Three times a week — every Monday, Wednesday and Saturday — The Divers Boat offers something very few centres on the island can match: the 3S combo. Instead of a single destination, you hit three of the best dive sites in the Gulf of Thailand in one trip.
Southwest Pinnacle
One of Koh Tao’s richest dive sites, with its coral-covered pinnacles, dense fish life and regular encounters with leopard sharks and reef sharks. A site that delivers on every dive.
Samran
The pelagic playground of the Gulf of Thailand. Dense schools of barracuda, giant trevally, king mackerel… and one of the best whale shark spots in the region. Blue water diving at its finest.
Sail Rock
To finish on the most iconic dive site in the Gulf of Thailand. After Southwest and Samran, the chimney of Sail Rock and its resident marine life hit differently.
Three sites, three atmospheres, one day. That’s the 3S — and that’s why divers who do it once always want to do it again.
Departing from Koh Tao or Koh Phangan: You Choose
One of The Divers Boat’s advantages that very few centres can claim: we depart every day from two islands in the Gulf of Thailand.
From Koh Tao (Mae Haad): daily departures, around 2 hours to reach this Gulf of Thailand dive site. The journey is part of the experience — briefing, breakfast on board, and the excitement building as the island disappears behind you.
From Koh Phangan: daily departures as well, with just 1.5 hours of travel time to Sail Rock. If you’re staying on Koh Phangan — for the Full Moon Party, for yoga, or simply because you love the island — there’s no need to take a ferry to Koh Tao. We pick you up directly.
Wherever you are in the Gulf, The Divers Boat has a departure for you.
Why Choose The Divers Boat to Dive Sail Rock?
We Go Every Day
Most dive centres offer Sail Rock as a weekly or twice-weekly special trip. At The Divers Boat, Sail Rock is a daily departure — from both Koh Tao and Koh Phangan. You dive this Gulf of Thailand dive site when it works for you, not when the schedule allows.
A Large, Comfortable Boat Built for the Journey
The trip to Sail Rock takes 2 hours from Koh Tao and 1.5 hours from Koh Phangan. That’s time you should spend relaxing — not crammed onto a boat with nowhere to put your gear.
Our boat comfortably accommodates up to 55 divers and is organised into two distinct spaces:
- The lower deck — your dive deck. Equipment rigged and ready, tank right where you need it, entry into the water easy and organised.
- The upper deck — your surface interval space. Tables, benches, shade, food and water on board. You arrive at your second dive rested and ready.
With a full team of dive guides in the water, groups stay small underwater regardless of how many people are on board. You are never just a number.
Open Water Certified? You’re Ready
Your Open Water certification (SSI, PADI or equivalent) is all you need to dive Sail Rock with us. Our guides know this Gulf of Thailand dive site in every current, at every depth, and in every season.
When Is the Best Time to Dive Sail Rock?
The honest answer: any day we can get there — and that’s almost every day of the year. There is no low season in Koh Tao: it is one of the few places in the world where diving is possible 365 days a year.
Whale shark season at Sail Rock peaks in March–April and again in October–November, though sightings occur throughout the year.
Visibility regularly reaches 15 to 25 metres. Water temperature stays between 27°C and 30°C year-round — a 3mm wetsuit is all you need. Ideal conditions to make the most of this exceptional dive site in the Gulf of Thailand.
