Diving Koh Tao is one of the best decisions you can make as a diver. Known worldwide as “The Diving Island”, Koh Tao offers year-round conditions, 28 exceptional dive sites, and a marine life diversity that keeps divers coming back year after year. At The Divers Boat, our SSI-certified team has been guiding divers through these waters since 2016 — from first-timers to experienced fun divers. Indeed, diving Koh Tao with us means small groups, dedicated boats, and uncrowded sites thanks to our staggered departure times.

Year-round
Why choose Koh Tao for diving?
Koh Tao — “Turtle Island” — earned its reputation as one of the world’s top dive destinations for good reason. Warm water year-round (28–30°C), visibility regularly exceeding 20 metres, and an extraordinary concentration of marine life make every dive unique. Moreover, the island’s 28 dive sites cater to every level, from first-time Try Scuba experiences in sheltered bays to deep pinnacles and open-water encounters with whale sharks.
According to Wikipedia, Koh Tao is one of the most popular scuba diving locations in Southeast Asia — and the numbers confirm it. The island consistently ranks among the world’s top destinations for dive certifications. Furthermore, with no real off-season and ideal conditions almost every day of the year, diving Koh Tao is possible whenever you visit.
Unlike many destinations, Koh Tao offers excellent diving conditions throughout the year. Water temperature stays between 28°C and 30°C, and visibility ranges from 10 to 30 metres. The calmest period runs from March to October, but diving is possible on almost every day of the year.
Diving Koh Tao with three dedicated boats
What sets The Divers Boat apart from most centres on the island is our fleet of three fully owned boats — two based in Koh Tao, one in Koh Phangan. As a result, every diver gets an experience tailored to their location and level — without compromise.
Later departures — uncrowded dive sites
Our most distinctive advantage when diving Koh Tao with us is our staggered schedule. Unlike most centres that depart at dawn, our boats leave later — the white boat at 6:30am, the blue boat at 9:00am. By the time we reach the sites, the early boats are already heading back. In short, you dive Sail Rock, Southwest Pinnacle and Samran Pinnacle without the crowds — more space, calmer marine life, a better experience overall. The red boat applies the same principle from Koh Phangan, departing at 10:00am when all other operators have already left.
It’s also why our Open Water course takes just 2 days instead of 3 — every dive happens in optimal conditions, without rushing. Furthermore, this exclusive 2-day format is available only at The Divers Boat on Koh Tao.
Fun dives and signature excursions in Koh Tao
For certified divers, diving Koh Tao with The Divers Boat means access to the island’s very best sites — every day. Our blue boat runs 7 days a week, exclusively for fun divers from Koh Tao. From Koh Phangan, the red boat covers Sail Rock daily at 10:00am. Maximum 4 divers per guide on all three boats ensures quality supervision and a personalised experience underwater.
SSI dive courses in Koh Tao — from Try Scuba to Divemaster
Koh Tao is one of the best places in the world to get certified — and The Divers Boat is the only centre on the island to offer the SSI Open Water in just 2 days. Same international standards, optimised organisation, uncrowded sites. Indeed, every ocean dive takes place in the best possible conditions, thanks to our staggered departures.
28 dive sites around Koh Tao
From shallow coral gardens perfect for beginners to deep open-water pinnacles frequented by pelagic species, diving Koh Tao gives access to an extraordinary range of underwater environments. Moreover, 3 of the island’s sites are military wrecks — the HTMS Sattakut, the Suphairin and the Hanhak Sattru — now transformed into thriving artificial reefs.

Marine life when diving Koh Tao
The underwater world around Koh Tao is genuinely impressive. Hard corals, table corals, staghorn formations and mushroom corals provide the backdrop for hundreds of species. On almost every dive, you can expect to encounter blue-spotted stingrays, barracudas, angelfish, butterflyfish, giant groupers, sea turtles and vibrant reef ecosystems. Moreover, Koh Tao and the surrounding pinnacles — especially Chumphon Pinnacle and Sail Rock — are among the best places in the world to encounter whale sharks.
In 2024, one of our instructors encountered two whale sharks simultaneously at Sail Rock — an extraordinary moment that perfectly illustrates why diving Koh Tao stays with you forever. Sightings are never guaranteed, but our team knows the best seasons and spots. According to WWF, whale sharks are the world’s largest fish — and Koh Tao is one of the few places where encounters are genuinely frequent.

Frequently asked questions — diving Koh Tao
Do I need to know how to swim to dive in Koh Tao?
Basic swimming ability is recommended, but you don’t need to be an expert. For Try Scuba, no minimum level is required — your instructor stays by your side at all times. For the Open Water certification, basic comfort in the water is sufficient.
When is the best time for diving Koh Tao?
There is no real off-season in Koh Tao. Diving is possible almost every day of the year, with water temperatures of 28–30°C and visibility from 10 to 30 metres. The calmest period runs from March to October, but even during the rainy season, conditions are generally excellent.
Why is The Divers Boat’s Open Water only 2 days?
We’ve optimised our course organisation so that all ocean dives take place during our staggered departures — meaning uncrowded sites, better conditions and more focused training. The SSI standards are identical to a 3-day course. This 2-day format is exclusive to The Divers Boat on Koh Tao.
Can I see whale sharks when diving Koh Tao?
Yes — Koh Tao and its surrounding pinnacles, especially Chumphon Pinnacle and Sail Rock, are among the best places in the world for whale shark encounters. Sightings are never guaranteed, but our team dives these sites every day and knows exactly when and where conditions are most favourable.
What makes The Divers Boat different from other dive centres in Koh Tao?
Three key differences: two fully specialised boats (one for training, one exclusively for certified fun divers), staggered departure times so you arrive at dive sites when other boats are leaving, and a maximum of 4 divers per guide. The result: less crowd, more marine life, a genuinely personalised experience.
SSI or PADI — which certification should I choose in Koh Tao?
Both SSI and PADI are internationally recognised and equivalent in value worldwide. At The Divers Boat, we teach SSI — one of the world’s most respected diving agencies. The choice ultimately depends on which team you want to dive with.
