Southwest Pinnacle — first dive of the 3S Trip Koh Tao

The day opens at Southwest Pinnacle, off the south-west coast of Koh Tao. This cluster of submerged granite pinnacles hosts one of the most spectacular anemone fields in the Gulf of Thailand — hundreds of multi-coloured anemones covering the top and flanks of the main pinnacle, each sheltering colonies of pink and orange clownfish. Indeed, it is a visually arresting opening to the day, perfect for warming up the eyes and the underwater cameras.

Beyond the anemone garden, Southwest Pinnacle is also rich in pelagic life. Giant groupers, barracuda schools and giant trevally are regularly encountered here. According to Wikipedia, Koh Tao’s dive sites are among the most biodiverse in Southeast Asia. Depth ranges from 7 to 30 metres, with the possibility of a whale shark encounter during favourable periods.

Samran Pinnacle — the secret site of the 3S Trip Koh Tao

The second dive of the 3S Trip Koh Tao is often the most surprising. Samran Pinnacle does not appear in any dive guide. This submerged pinnacle in the Gulf of Thailand is a local fishing ground, known only to the Thai fishermen who have worked these waters for generations. There are no mooring buoys and no markings of any kind: only our GPS coordinates and sonar make it possible to locate the pinnacle below the surface. As a result, the site remains virtually untouched by tourist diving.

Thanks to its total isolation, Samran concentrates an exceptional range of pelagic species: massive barracuda schools, giant trevally, hunting trevallies and cobia — one of the Gulf of Thailand’s most impressive and least-known apex predators. We are virtually the only dive centre on Koh Tao that can take you here. It is precisely this “secret site” quality that makes Samran the hidden jewel of the 3S Trip Koh Tao.

The day closes on Sail Rock — and what a finale. Unanimously regarded as the best dive site in the Gulf of Thailand, Sail Rock is our home turf at The Divers Boat.
