Samran Pinnacle dive site, Koh Tao, is one of the most exclusive underwater experiences in the Gulf of Thailand. And one that almost no other dive centre in the world can offer you. This is not a dive site in the traditional sense. It is a local Thai fishing spot, known only to fishermen who have worked these waters for generations. No mooring buoy, no guide rope, no markings. The only way to find Samran is with a precise GPS coordinate and a sonar. At The Divers Boat, we are virtually the only dive centre on Koh Tao to take divers here. Massive barracuda schools, giant trevally, cobia, Samran is pure, untouched, pelagic diving.

Samran Pinnacle dive site Koh Tao: the secret spot of the Gulf of Thailand
Samran Pinnacle is not a dive site in the conventional sense — it is a local Thai fishing ground, known only to the fishermen who have worked these waters for generations. There is no mooring buoy, no rope line, no signage of any kind: to find Samran, you need an exact GPS waypoint and a sonar to detect the pinnacle beneath the surface. It is precisely this combination of local knowledge and navigational expertise that makes a dive here a genuinely rare and exclusive experience.
At The Divers Boat, we are virtually the only dive centre on Koh Tao to bring divers to this site. Samran Pinnacle is the centrepiece of our legendary 3S Trip — Southwest Pinnacle, Samran Pinnacle and Sail Rock in a single day at sea. Departure at 9am, return at 6pm: a full day on three of the most exceptional sites in the Gulf of Thailand, on an itinerary that only The Divers Boat can offer.
Why does Samran Pinnacle attract so many large pelagics?
Like Sail Rock, Samran Pinnacle owes its exceptional marine life to its total isolation. This submerged pinnacle, far from any coastline and unknown to mainstream dive boats, has never been subject to industrial fishing pressure. As a result, large pelagic species naturally congregate here, drawn by the pinnacle’s structure and the currents that sweep food and prey across the site.
Furthermore, its underwater profile resembles a more compact version of Chumphon Pinnacle: a granite pinnacle whose summit rises to 14 metres, with walls dropping down to 40 metres. It is precisely this vertical configuration that channels the currents and creates ideal conditions for massive schools of open-water fish. Every dive at Samran is different — and that is exactly what makes it so compelling.
Marine life at Samran Pinnacle: exceptional open-water encounters
At Samran Pinnacle, forget macro life and coral gardens — this is the realm of large pelagics. From the moment you descend, massive schools of barracuda and giant trevally fill the water column. In the blue, giant trevally and trevallies hunt in tight formation through the current. And on occasion, a solitary cobia — one of the Gulf of Thailand’s most impressive and least-known predators — glides past to inspect the visitors below.
- 🐟 Massive barracuda schools
- 🐟 Giant trevally
- 🐟 Trevallies hunting in formation
- 🐟 Cobia (rare apex predator)
Samran Pinnacle is first and foremost a Thai fishing ground — and that is precisely what makes it so extraordinary underwater. Unknown to tourist circuits, unmarked, accessible only to skippers who know its exact GPS coordinates, this site concentrates pelagic marine life found nowhere else around Koh Tao. At The Divers Boat, we have the knowledge and the privilege to bring you there.
What level do you need to dive Samran Pinnacle Koh Tao?
Samran Pinnacle is accessible to Open Water (OW) certified divers — the top of the pinnacle at 14 metres falls within OW limits. However, given the maximum depth of 40 metres, variable and sometimes strong currents, and the blue water conditions without a visual reference, an Advanced Open Water (AOW) certification is strongly recommended to fully enjoy the site.
In addition, Nitrox (Enriched Air) is particularly well suited to Samran Pinnacle: at these depths, it significantly extends bottom time and allows you to make the most of every pelagic encounter. Simply book it in advance when reserving your 3S Trip with The Divers Boat.
