Southwest Pinnacle — first dive of the 3S Trip Koh Tao
The day opens at Southwest Pinnacle, off the south-west coast of Koh Tao. This cluster of submerged granite pinnacles hosts one of the most spectacular anemone fields in the Gulf of Thailand — hundreds of multi-coloured anemones covering the top and flanks of the main pinnacle, each sheltering colonies of pink and orange clownfish. Indeed, it is a visually arresting opening to the day, perfect for warming up the eyes and the underwater cameras.
Beyond the anemone garden, Southwest Pinnacle is also rich in pelagic life. Giant groupers, barracuda schools and giant trevally are regularly encountered here. According to Wikipedia, Koh Tao’s dive sites are among the most biodiverse in Southeast Asia. Depth ranges from 7 to 30 metres, with the possibility of a whale shark encounter during favourable periods.
Shark Island — the third site of the 3S Trip Koh Tao
The second dive of the 3S Trip Koh Tao brings you to Shark Island, a granite islet whose silhouette resembles a shark’s fin breaking the surface. Its slopes are covered in lush coral gardens, providing a striking contrast to the anemone fields of Southwest Pinnacle earlier in the day.
Resident groupers and rays patrol the reef here, making Shark Island a rewarding dive in its own right. Combined with Southwest Pinnacle and Sail Rock, it completes a trio of sites that very few dive centres on Koh Tao bring together into a single daily departure.
