Finding the best dive centre in Koh Tao<\/strong> for you is not a question of Google rating or headline price. It is a question of criteria. Here are the 7 questions to ask \u2014 and the answers we give at The Divers Boat.<\/p>\n

Why the centre you choose changes everything in Koh Tao<\/h2>\n

Koh Tao is the divers’ island \u2014 and it is also the island with the highest number of dive centres per square kilometre in the world. Some are excellent. Others run on volume. In between there are dozens of shades. A poor choice will not put your life at risk \u2014 safety is generally well regulated on the island \u2014 but it can turn a diving week you have been waiting months for into a disappointing experience.<\/p>\n

Here are the 7 criteria that make the difference. These are not criteria invented to talk you into choosing The Divers Boat. They are the questions you should put to any centre before you book.<\/p>\n

1. Certification \u2014 SSI or PADI, and is it recognised everywhere?<\/h2>\n

The two big certification agencies in Koh Tao are SSI<\/a> and PADI. Both are recognised internationally and valid for life. The choice between them is often secondary \u2014 what matters is that the centre is officially accredited by the organisation it represents.<\/p>\n

An SSI-accredited centre such as The Divers Boat follows strict protocols for training, safety and equipment. Always check that the centre displays its accreditation number \u2014 and be wary of centres offering “equivalent” certifications that nobody recognises.<\/p>\n

2. Group size \u2014 how many divers per guide?<\/h2>\n

This is probably the most important criterion, and the least visible on dive centre websites. A guide looking after 8 to 10 divers underwater cannot take proper care of you. They are herding. The least experienced divers often end up trailing behind, stressed, and the dive becomes a race to keep up with the group.<\/p>\n

3. The boat \u2014 dedicated or shared?<\/h2>\n

Many centres in Koh Tao do not have their own boat. They buy seats on boats shared with other centres \u2014 sometimes 3 or 4 different centres on the same vessel. The result: mixed groups, briefings in several languages at once, shared space and an organisation that is often confusing.<\/p>\n

\nWe own our boats. In Koh Tao, the white boat is used exclusively for courses and Try Scuba dives, and the blue boat exclusively for certified fun divers. A third boat, the red one, runs daily to Sail Rock from Chaloklum on Koh Phangan. Your equipment stays on board \u2014 you carry nothing from one day to the next.<\/div>\n

4. Language \u2014 will you really be taught in a language you master?<\/h2>\n

Several centres in Koh Tao describe themselves as multilingual because one instructor speaks a few words of your language. Learning to dive in a language you do not handle well is stressful \u2014 and underwater, a misunderstanding can have consequences.<\/p>\n

Ask the question directly: do all the instructors speak that language fluently? Are the briefings, the manuals and the follow-up delivered in it from start to finish? A centre that genuinely works in your language will answer you clearly.<\/p>\n

The advertised price is not always the final price. Some centres charge separately for equipment, SSI e-learning, meals, transfers or even tanks. Others include everything. Before you compare two prices, compare what they include.<\/p>\n

Not every centre offers the same sites. Some stay on the close, easy sites \u2014 Japanese Garden, White Rock \u2014 even with divers who could go much further. Others, like us, run trips to the most demanding and most beautiful sites: Sail Rock, Chumphon Pinnacle, Samran Pinnacle.<\/p>\n

That is not bad in itself if you know what you are choosing. But if you want a human experience, where the instructors know your first name and your level, that is another story.<\/p>\n

The best indicator? Read the Google and TripAdvisor reviews \u2014 not the overall score, the details. Do people mention their instructor by name? Do they describe a personalised experience? Or do all the reviews look alike and talk about “good organisation” without anything specific?<\/p>\n
